This study of mysticism not only articulates Plotinus’ position but also is an example of his method. Plotinus approaches philosophical problems and their discussion by various philosophical schools by examining their terms and attempting to explain their meaning. He does not, however, take philosophical terms rigidly. A prime example is his discussion of matter. He accepts the Aristotelian term, but shows how both Plato and Aristotle must mean the same thing, despite different terms and modes of discussion, in their common effort to resolve the contradictions inherited from their predecessors. He then applies this analysis in his arguments against the Stoics and Gnostics of his own day. Martino’s use of mysticism is analogous. He examines the definition of the term in 19th and 20th century thought, where it has roots in the analysis of subjective experience in figures like William James, or in the more recent phenomenological analysis in the philosophy of religion […].
